NLDS Game 4 Recap: Dodgers 3, Mets 1

The Dodgers defeated the Mets by a score of 3-1, forcing a game 5 that will take place on Thursday in Los Angeles. Clayton Kershaw went 7 strong innings, striking out 9, and allowing only a solo home run to Daniel Murphy. Steven Matz went 5 and allowed 3 runs in the 5th inning, on RBI hits by Adrian Gonzalez and Justin Turner. In game 5, Jacob deGrom will face off against Zack Greinke.

Kershaw and Matz came strong out of the gate, each going through the first two innings with ease. Matz ran into trouble in the 3rd though, allowing a 1-out single to Clayton Kershaw, and 2-out singles to Howie Kendrick and Adrian Gonzalez to make it 1-0 Dodgers. Justin Turner followed with a 2-run double to make it 3-0.

The Mets got their run in the 4th, when Daniel Murphy took Clayton Kershaw deep for the second time in this series. The Mets brought themselves closer, making it 3-1. However, that’s all the Mets would get, as Kershaw, Chris Hatcher, and Kenley Jansen shut them down through the remainder of the game. The Mets had a scoring opportunity in the 8th, after Hatcher walked Curtis Granderson with 2 outs, and Jansen walked David Wright. However, Daniel Murphy flew out to right to end the threat, and Jansen closed out with a 1-2-3 ninth.

POSITIVES: Murphy had his 2nd home run against Kershaw in the series, and only his 3rd home run against a lefty all season. A line drive single by Juan Lagares and an infield chopper by Yoenis Cespedes were the only other hits the Mets had on the night. Bartolo Colon pitched two scoreless innings in relief, and Tyler Clippard and Jeurys Familia pitched a scoreless inning each.

NEGATIVES: Steven Matz was solid but shaky, and gave up all 3 runs with two outs in the 3rd. The Mets offense wasn’t able to do anything against Dodgers pitching, save for Daniel Murphy.

Jacob deGrom faces off against Zack Greinke on Thursday in the final game of the 5-game series.
