The Mets (74-59) defeated the Phillies (53-81) by a score of 9-4.
Kelly Johnson began the scoring with an opposite-field 2-out RBI double in the 3rd inning, scoring David Wright from first. Ruben Tejada followed with a bloop down the right field line, which right fielder Domonic Brown tried to make a shoestring catch on. Brown missed the catch, and fell over the short wall in foul territory, allowing the ball to roll all the way to the wall. Tejada scored on a 2-run inside-the-park home run to make it 3-0.
The Mets added three more runs in the 3rd inning, on an RBI double by Daniel Murphy scoring Curtis Granderson from first, and a two-run opposite-field home run by Michael Conforto.
After a fast start in which he struck out the side in the first inning, Matt Harvey began to run into trouble in the middle innings. After allowing two singles (and an ill-fated throw by Yoenis Cespedes), Harvey had runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out. Erik Kratz doubled into the left-center gap to score both runners, and after advancing to 3rd, scored on an infield hit by Cesar Hernandez. The score was now 6-3.
With the bases loaded and one out in the 5th inning, Ruben Tejada brought in another run with a slow grounder. In the top of the 7th, Darnell Sweeney got that run back with a long home run to right-center. After a walk to Cesar Hernandez, Harvey’s night was over.
Sean Gilmartin came in with lefties Odubel Herrera and Ryan Howard due up. After allowing a single to Herrera, Gilmartin got Howard to ground into a 6-6-3 double play (after Odubel Herrera was called out for leaving the baseline in order to evade Ruben Tejada’s tag).
In the bottom of the inning, after a single from Conforto, pinch runner Eric Young Jr. was caught stealing after sliding past 2nd base. After a single by Travis d’Arnaud, Kelly Johnson reached on a fielder’s choice, then stole second. Tejada singled him in to make it 8-4. Later, in the 8th, Yoenis Cespedis hit a hard solo home run to left field.
Tyler Clippard and Addison Reed pitched the 8th and 9th respectively, to give the Mets the 9-4 win.
